Mission Statement: To build a capable, affordable cruising boat with readily-available skills, materials, equipment and facilities.
If, like me, you dream of getting out there and sailing/cruising the world's waters, this blog/site aims to show my approach to how to do just that. Capable cruising boats should not be limited to the reach of the rich and privileged. If you accept the premise that a 25 year working lifespan for your boat is plenty for you to achieve your dreams (seems reasonable!) and are not concerned about such capitalist constructs as resale value, then the capable cruising boat is within the reach of a meagre budget. Go for it!

EP 28

Episode 28 came out last weekend while we were visiting Elizabeth in Yorkshire. We returned to the ongoing snow and cold, which frankly, is beginning to hamper boatbuilding progress. Anyhow, here's the latest episode, in which I talk about the various systems that I intend to build in. Enjoy!

Long winter

It's still snowing :-(

I spoke to my dad on Sunday and he reckons it's the coldest (longest) winter he can remember. As he's a keen gardener and takes a special interest in the weather, that's quite a statement!

I did get down the shed yesterday evening and glued 3 of the last 4 pieces of the first layer of the chine log and sheer clamp in place. It was too cold really, but I gambled on it warming sufficiently for the glue to set off over the day today. We'll see....

A massive THANK YOU to my (currently) 103 YouTube subscribers. You are fantastic - each and every one of you.

Maybe this thing can grow into something special - boatbuilding, equipping, voyaging, materials, travel-log,............... for ordinary people like you and me :-)

The aft end

Here's a pic of the aft end as it currently stands. I need to adjust the notches on the station 11 so that the angle of the chine log runs better towards the stern post. The sheer clamp pieces are currently strapped together to encourage some bend in the wood. I'll probably have to steam them to get them to bend properly though. Still... Getting there!

Weekend progress

11/3/2018

I've had a good weekend. All of the station sections are standing, with the exception of the two end-most ones that fit to the bow and stern knees. The first laminates of the chine log and sheer clamp are virtually all the way round - again it's waiting on the stem and stern post to be finished off. I've cut the joints in the stern post for where the chine log joins it and I've left the sheer clamp bound together at the aft end to encourage the wood pieces to bend in nicely.

Main cabin standing

The various station sections for the main cabin, 2 of the aft deck and 1 fore deck sections are now all in position. I've started fixing the sheer clamp and chine log in position. Half of the pieces and scarf joints for the longitudinal members are cut now, so I hope to get all of the boat sections standing and secured together this coming weekend. The weather is finally forecast to warm up a bit (temps above 10 deg C are forecast!! :-)). I've also ordered a box of bronze screws so I can put some mechanical fixings in the chine log/sheer clamp to stern post/stem joints.
