Mission Statement: To build a capable, affordable cruising boat with readily-available skills, materials, equipment and facilities.
If, like me, you dream of getting out there and sailing/cruising the world's waters, this blog/site aims to show my approach to how to do just that. Capable cruising boats should not be limited to the reach of the rich and privileged. If you accept the premise that a 25 year working lifespan for your boat is plenty for you to achieve your dreams (seems reasonable!) and are not concerned about such capitalist constructs as resale value, then the capable cruising boat is within the reach of a meagre budget. Go for it!

In this latest episode, the plywood for the planking arrives and we lug it down the garden. I then talk about plywood choices and attempt to ap"ply" some science to justify/confirm my choice.

Exciting times! Just taken a delivery of 60 sheets of 10mm wbp pine ply which will become the hull and deck planking. Kerry and I have already had the fun of shifting it all down the garden and into the shed. The next move for these beauties will involve them being marked out and cut to size ready for nailing and gluing to the boat structure.

Patrons

I posted my first ever patrons-only video post earlier this week. Now, I need to make something absolutely clear; I shall continue to produce my weekly free YouTube video blog posts of the boat build progress, and I shall continue working hard to make those videos as good as I possibly can. My free content is extremely important to me and it gives me quite a thrill that a lot of people seem to be enjoying the videos.

However, I also feel I'd like to do something special for my patrons and also to try to encourage more people to  become patrons and support me on Patreon. So, as I said, my first patrons-only post is up now. I shall try to post more specials, maybe every two weeks. I shall also look into Patreons 'Lens' feature, that allows creators to post 'behind the scenes' video posts that only stay available for a couple of days. As time goes on, I intend to increase this patron-only content in order to give real value to the good people who go that extra way to support me on Patreon.

If you want to become a patron to support this project and get access to the patron-only content, just click the button below.

Patreon changes

I think and hope this might be important news!!

I've decided to make a major change to the way I approach Patreon. Up until today, I had it set up so that Patreon patrons pledged to donate a minimum of 2 Dollars per video post in appreciation of the video blog posts and the writings on this website. But, I wasn't happy with it. In fact, it had been bugging me for some considerable time - I felt the donations asked for were too high and there was really too little reward for the kindness shown.

So, I've changed it. From today on, Patreon pledges will be on a monthly basis (as opposed to per content post). The minimum pledge is 1 Dollar per month and, from 2 Dollars-a-month upwards, Patreon patrons will get access to special, patrons-only content. I shall endeavour to post one short, patrons-only video post per week showing behind-the-scenes footage, further detail of the build, thoughts and ideas about boatbuilding and any other background information that I feel is relevant.

So please, if you're interested; if you'd like to show your appreciation of the free content that I make available; if you'd like to know more about the project and what motivates me to do it; head over to Patreon (click the button below) and support the project. Thank you!!

And EP29 :-)

Progress is quite good. Obviously, having a lovely long Easter weekend helped, although the weather was very variable - ranging from warm sunshine to freezing snowy conditions. Anyhow, all of the floor beams are now in position and I've started on the second laminate layer of the sheer clamp. Photos soon!

Video episode 29 is out, in which I fit the floor beams and talk about clamps various. Enjoy!
