Mission Statement: To build a capable, affordable cruising boat with readily-available skills, materials, equipment and facilities.
If, like me, you dream of getting out there and sailing/cruising the world's waters, this blog/site aims to show my approach to how to do just that. Capable cruising boats should not be limited to the reach of the rich and privileged. If you accept the premise that a 25 year working lifespan for your boat is plenty for you to achieve your dreams (seems reasonable!) and are not concerned about such capitalist constructs as resale value, then the capable cruising boat is within the reach of a meagre budget. Go for it!

Not much progress this weekend - we went down to Düsseldorf and visited the boat show there. An excellent show - really big - there were 16 halls filled with anything connected to watersports. Lots of good things to see, but rather tiring after about 6 hours of poking about. I resisted buying anything much - I did pick up an overview chart of the French canal and river system -but I did get a few leaflets on interesting bits of kit - solar panels, that air breathing stuff for under matresses, navigation software. All in all, most enjoyable.

We got back Sunday midday and I headed pretty much straight down to the boatshed. Hazel and I shot some video and I cleaned up the glue on the aft side of the station 9 bulkhead. That's all finished in terms of its construction. It just remains to glass and epoxy it and put a bit of filler around as necessary. I'll do my best to get that done by next weekend and then make a start on the station 10 frame.

Episode 20 is out now. It looks at the station 9 bulkhead and then I talk a bit about some ideas on cruising boats.

Hi Tony, thanks for a very interesting post and video once again. I'd be interested to know if you considered other boats before choosing to build a Benford Badger? Your Canadian and US nautical experience would have given you plenty of background knowledge, I imagine. And did you look at existing cruising yachts, second hand? Or was the joy of creating your own boat a big part of the decision? I suppose you can control the price of your project by recycling wood, as you are doing. The satisfaction must be immense!
These are some ideas you may choose to discuss in future videos / blog posts. All the best, Chris

Hi Chris

Yeah, good questions.

When it came to this new boat, I always wanted to build it myself. I find building part oof the adventure and believe that the knowledge that you built it yourself can only add to the enjoyment of cruising.

As to the choice of boat, I'm a fairly low-tech sort of guy, so, in the end, it came down to a choice between a Benford dory or a George Buehler design (Juno, maybe).

Your idea of addressing these point in future video witters is a good one. thanks :-)

All the best

Tony
